Another option is to use VLC.

I have realised for a while this, but I did not fully test this recently.

"Multiple Replace" don't remember space " " only.

I don't know other people (or languages) requires this, but I often use this with Japanese.

I often replace double byte space "　" with single byte space " ",

you can test this.

Setup single space " " with "a" then, cancel and close subtitle edit, and reopen then, space is gone.

All of you would say "so what! " lol but CJK (Chinese Japanese Korean really need this) at the moment, I have setup this manually.

Or alternatively, is it the way to customise "Fix common Errors" ? This is very language specific, so This is VERY common for CJK but nothing to do with single byte languages.

Hope you do understand my point, but if easy, please fix this

Double byte : full-width (全角, zenkaku)
Single byte : half-width (半角, hankaku)

Is it possible in any way to choose which sound card Subtitle Edit should use for playback? I tried to change the settings in VLC without effect and looking for a parameter in the settings.xml.

Thing is I have two sound cards where I use one of them for Spotify on my stereo and such. Sadly Spotify doesn't let you change this and haven't found a stand alone program that actually does what it says its supposed to do. So I have to set that sound card as default while with the result that the sounds from Subtitle Edit also plays in my stereo instead of my desktop speakers.

VLC is no option for me as I seem to have some accuracy issues with that, however I decided to remove xy-VSFilter and rather use the internal sub-renderer in MPC-HC. So problem "solved" for me, no need to look further into it.

Another question however, is there a way to merge (not append) subtitles? One of the tv stations here broadcasts subtitles for the foreign parts separate from the main subtitle, so I need to merge them, like braiding. I have been using srtmerger.org for this, but they seem to have disappeared.

Something has happened to the English (both en and us) dictionary for ocr import of .sub-files. No words in plural is recognized any longer and I have to add them to the list manually one by one.
For example 'channels' is not recognized as a word and in the suggestion area only 'channel' and 'channel s'(?) are listed.
Is this something that can be fixed?

For some subtitle it makes the task of ocr-ing impossible.

I think that happens when the underlying line 'touches' the line upon it. It happens, for example, with accented capital letters. Thanks, ciao.

posted by TwinShadow at 13-04-05 10:52 AM: I've got what is probably a minor bug and/or annoyance. Its nothing major, just have to do some manual fixing in the end, but it seems with OCR'ing subs, sometimes the OCR doesn't do the line breaks correctly.

Small example. I had a line that in the image sub file (a VOB/IDX), it was "You should have said[br /]something if you were there." (the break is to show where the break is suppose to be) The end result of the OCR would give something like this: "You should have[br /] said something if you were there." Or other times it would put one later after where the break is suppose to be, or occasionally none at all. I had quite a few instances where there is no break where there should be.

I can give image examples later when I have a bit more time and after I OCR something else to show exactly what's going on. It may just be the default settings I left things at perhaps, who knows. But thought I'd point it out for now.

I would like to suggest some improvements to that very good program:

- reading a DVD: right now SE scans the ifo structure for each subtitle separately. This means that importing two languages is also scanning twice. Because scanning takes some minutes it would be nice if SE remembers the first scanning e.g. by an index file to speed-up the second one

- if a pair of words is already included in the OCRFixReplaceList this word still shows up as unknown word also it's already replaced

- when adding words to user dictionary/noise list from the unknown word list it would be nice if SE will remove all occurences of the word (if added unchanged) from the listbox containing the current unknown words when add operation returns.

- when adding words to the user dictionary from the unknwon word list SE is asking anytime where to put it to. For usual we want to put it by default to the language file that has been selected for spell check. So right now this messagebox is more annoying than useful. Also annoying when the message box says "added" or "not added". Instead of a message box a status bar entry would be sufficient if it was not successful and no message at all on success.

- Noise/Name list: For usual the names are equal in most of the European languages. Right now SE does not care for that and so if transcoding the French and the English Subtitle you have to enter the name in both lists separately. Wouldn't it be more convenient to have two buttons, one for "adding to language COMMON noise list" and another for "adding to the SPECIFIC active language"

- List box "All fixes": It's very hard to detect with your eyes in case of normal subtitles what SE has fixed. I know it's not that easy when using standard list boxes to colorize only some part of a text but I guess it would be very neat to have the corrected word or letter colored in red.

Any improvement will be much appreciated and welcome!

by the way, I have just found youtube support VTT subtitle format (in addition to SRT, SBV format.)

SBV is also useful when you need to merge subtitle files manually with text editor.

VTT seems very similar to SRT and I myself don't need this at all, but the leading opensource subtitle software, you may want to add this in the future.

First off: Awesome work with Subtitle Edit! It is by far the most useful subtitle editor I've ever tried. And it gets even better with each update! ;)

I'm using SE for years now and I've come across a couple of request/suggestions:

- In the dialog for "Tools/Change casing.../Fix only names casing" it would be really helpful to have "Select All" and "Inverse Selection" buttons - similar to the Fix Common Errors menu.

- I'm not sure anyone else bothers this, but I'd like lyrics encased in music symbols (e.g. * We are the champions * instead of * We are the champions). '*' is the music symbol in this case. It would be really cool if there would be the possibility to add the ending symbol where it's missing.

- Again, not sure if anyone is bothered by this, but I also like to have every lyrics line starting with upper case. So an option to start with upper case after the defined music symbol would be great!

It would be really cool if you would consider these in your next update. :)

Still there are things to do, if you did not get tired. :)

1. If you start empty SE and open empty waveform window, you'll see Pause button instead of Play.
Perhaps in MainDesigner.cs one line should be added:

and one removed:
//this.toolStripButtonWaveFormPlay.Visible = false;

3. I used dragging in waveform very often. To make adjustments slightly simpler, I thought about making the first (left) part shorter by about 0.1s when splitting subtitles in waveform thus making a small, but visible gap. It could be a parameter, and default 0 would keep the current behaviour with no gap.

3. And about two music symbols in previous message. I tried both ways, and prefered when there is only one. Sometimes opinions differ. :)

1. Multiple replace status is not saved between sessions
2. Even if it is selected, it doesn't do anything

On Remove text for HI and Redo Casing it should be great to have their settings dialogs, just like "Multiple Replace" and "Fix common errors"

It's not my primary subtitling program, but I hope it will be soon. Three features I'd love to see in future releases. In the Adjust window, a set end and go to next shortcut, that sets the end timecode and the start timecode of the next subtitle (3 frame gap between the two would be superb). A way to customize the shortcut keys(F9, F10 et al are too far up the keyboard). A way to customize [br /] for export/save (increases compatibility with other video editing programs).

You can fix the gap with Tools -> Minimum display... (or use use this version that will use the gap instantly :)

When you save a subtitle you can force "\n" (0xa) as line break if you press Ctrl+Shift while saving.
If SE uses wrong line-break for a specific format, do let me know!

first things first, many thanks for this great tool! And I really mean it. There are really not that many such projects out there that excel in the usefulness and dedication to development like this one does. My deep respect to you for this!

I really like the fact that you made the 'time codes generation' optional in the 'import plain text' window. This way it does not overwrite firstly imported time codes from elsewhere :-) But you are probably already aware of that :-)

Now I have a small feature request concerning the 'import plain text' window. If a line of the imported text is too long, it gets automatically split (in two or more captions). It would be more useful if that becomes optional instead of automatic, because it kind of messes up things for you if you have a ready timecodes file and a ready text file that are supposed to match together. It does not happen when you use 'one line is one subtitle', but it happens when you use 'split at blank lines'. It is kind of unexpected behavior because you expect the text to split at the blank lines and nowhere else :-)

BUG: When using Word as spell-checker, line breaks are removed from every line with a mistake.
I guess you remove the "[br /]" before sending the text to Word and you are not putting it back.

REQUEST: "Snap to scene". When you open a video, scene changes should be identified. When a subtitle disappears 0.20 or 0.30 seconds after a scene change, the end time should change. Also, when a subtitle appears 0.20 or 30 seconds after a scene change, the star time should change.
The user should be able to choose the lead-in and lead-out time, and if he wants to change start times, end times or both.

I often watch foreign movies with subtitles in SE. However I need each sentence to be on screen as long as possible because I read foreign text very slowly. Now I use "Adjust duration» with 4 char/sec, but it only extend the time forward. Is there any automatic way to prolong the time in both direction, may be by distributing the free time between previouse and next subtitle equally? I would even want to prepare some subtitle files for continual subtitle showing without any gap at all, with show time of a text sentence starting long before the sound one and finishing long after the real end, without overlapping of course.

But I could see a issue while using 'Change casing' feature. When there is no period (.) in a line and the next line starts with an upper case letter, it changes the upper case letter to the lower case in the next line. Usually a next line is preferred to start with an upper case or leave it as it is. Hope I am able to explain the issue well.

It's called "Keyframe snapping."

The user sets up 4 values in milliseconds; some of them could be zero. (In the help page it says 'frames' but in the last version was changed to milliseconds.)
The "minimum display time between paragraphs" could also be considered so that it doesn't stick 2 subtitles together when changing end times.

Regarding how to get keyframes, I think Aegisub uses Avisynth, for what I understood from its code. I don't think your programme does, right?

This is a list of fonts that doesn't suffer that problem at 8pt:
Arial Unicode MS, Book Antiqua, Bookman Old Style, Century, Comic Sans MS, Franklin Gothic Medium, Lucida Calligraphy, Lucida Handwriting, Lucida Sand Unicode, MS Reference Sans Serif, Papyrus (good at any font size but hard to read), Tempus Sans ITC.
All those fonts good at 8pt but broken if I change to other size (except external font Papyrus).
If this is WinXP problem, maybe SE should use one of those as a default font (not Times New Roman)

When clicking on a line of text in "list view", video playback doesn't start when I press the space bar. This was working on SE 3.3.1.

When using the EBU-STL export option, focus jumps to the bottom of the "EBU save options" page after entering the code page number and pressing the Tab key. Shouldn't the focus just jump to the next field?

1. Unfortunately, the loss of focus (r1669) could not work. Also I wrote about null value of parent, while the owner is set to 'this' by default. Though 'parent' does not help too.
The perfect way would be to use events, but Activate() call is a decent replacement (the equivalent of SetForgroundWindow() in C++), and I saw you added it later.
But to make the thing working, you need to add a call it in Main.cs in "Point Sync" processing.

I don't know if you need to call Activate() after every dialog; so far I've seen loss of focus only in that one place.

2. I could not reproduce in my XP the bug as in the first message up here. Different language or different font - I don't know.

3. F11 shifts instead of only setting start position.
I guess it should be like this:

SetStartTime(false);
}

The are questions from the previous version.
4. To add a minimize button in a full screen mode. In the place of 'fullscreen' button, which is empty.
Not absolutely necessary, but quite logical.
Until someone comes with better design, you can simply rotate and/or mirror the arrow in the current fullscreen button, so would point to the lower left corner.

For one, text editor use F3 as forward search, and Shift-F3 for searching backwards.

There is a bug also. Previous search string is remembered, but not when previous search string was not empty and the latest search failed.
For example, on you have 'the', enter 'aaaa' and that was not found. On Ctrl-F you'll see 'the' again.
That is not right, because in case of mistake you'll have to retype instead of changing.

It might be useful to keep previous searches in dropdown list; at least for the current session.

When I did manualy corrected the error I did see that one sentencenumber was dubble (as that the subtitlemaker manualy did split a sentence)

Van sentence 114 it dit go to 115, folowing bij 115 etc.
Subtitle-edit did not found it when I did check the subtitle before watching the movie.
Did I mis/forgot something? It is an .srt file.

(I know, bad english. My dutch is better.)

Also, VobSub files written by SE might be more combatible now.

On each use of the: "Fix common errors" I must set the language manually(default is French and I need Romanian)

Reversing order on 2 consecutive subtitle lines don't switch the numbering (I know, I must use the sort function, but... should be done automatically?)

You would not see anything unusual with small font sizes. But try to set font size to 12 and restart the program.

1. Vertical spacing in the grid is good enough with Tahoma, but not with Times New Roman.
"Options ] Settings ] Ok" sometimes helps, but not always; then I have to change size or font name.

2. "Syncronyzation ] Point sync ] Set sync point" shows sqeezed list even with Tahoma.

3. Also, the right side of the status bar is not updated consistently.
When starting the program with the List View active and no files open, it shows "Line number: 1" as if in Source view.
While in List View with loaded subtitles, when New is pressed, it still shows something like "3/742".

posted by fox at 13-12-02 10:11 PM: Since "Settings" was able to fix most troubles for the current of session, I thought it was a matter of the order of parameter setting. Or missing parameter assignments after reading configuration from file. Maybe it's more complex.

With the latest build, I set font to Times New Roman, 12 points. Both OSes are US English.

1. Windows XP SP3, all .Net from 1.0 up to 4.0.
On restart the List View shows normal text, but gridlines go as if font size is smaller (appears to be corresponding to 8 pts).
In "Set sync point" lower parts of every line was cropped - while in Point Sync list nothing is wrong.
(As said, before I've seen cropped lines in the main List View.)

2. Windows 7 SP1, 64-bit
It's better here. With Times New Roman the main List View is good, Point Sync list is equally good, but Set sync point is weird.
Lines are narrow. Text column font is always 12 pts (maybe with minor cropping at the bottom), other columns are 8 pts, except for the line with the cursor. When focus is in the list, the first 4 columns are 8 pts, on focus loss those change to 12 pts.

The only remaining hitch is that on startup the List View has narrow grid, both with and without subs loaded. Now it was sufficient to go to Settings and immediately press Cancel, then the grid would be correct. It should not change anything, but it does somehow.
Checked in XP, did not verify in Win 7 (it was not there before anyway).

Another subject.
MiniFAQ tells that space toggles pause/play in video. Well, it is not not (both fullscreen and in pane), only in waveform. Ctrl-P works, but it would be great to be able to use spacebar - it's an old habit.
It is Quartz player with ffdshow, if I get it correctly from the Process Explorer.
Besides, I noticed that the variable
private bool _isPaused
is 'false' initially while video is not playing. At certain conditions it takes an extra keypress to begin playback.

Two more ideas to think about.
1) Most, if not all, players I used saved current volume level. Currently implemented default value is not exactly that.
2) There is fullscreen button, but no reverse action button if fullscreen mode. Sometimes people prefer to use mouse instead of keyboard. Besides, there is an empty space for the button.

Only seems to be taking color into account, not border/shadow size or boldness. Can't check upper/lower margin settings with cropped image renders, but that's likely been missed, too.

A timecode offset dialogue box in the PNG/XML export window would be useful, as would an option to disable cropping for fullscreen renders.

when you rip retail sub files from disc..they duplicate the lines and combine the timing (don't ask me why)....it would save me and a lot of other people a lot of time if subtitle edit could sorta auto combine these duplicated lines into a single line with the proper times...

It's just not reading the scripts' font style info when it opens the files. The changelog for 3.3.1 says "Fixed: Point sync no longer thows away ssa/ass styling," so I assumed it could read ASS/SSA font style info. That isn't the case?

it isn't exactly an error of the programs....its just the way R1 dvd subbers type out and time the lines...im educated guess on why they do it that way is cause the vobsub and bd sub format don't really allow for other options...but yea ok I'll post an example here

Looking at code, I found it strange when font name is taken from configuration, but not the font size. And that code is executed in pre-Vista versions only.

Naturally, the main ListView got better when line 1313 in Main.cs was changed to:
float fontSize = Configuration.Settings.General.SubtitleFontSize;
Other items could be sized improperly, though I did not spot any bad side effect. But it's only an idea of solution.

Those who think the "ListView" topic is not over are wrong.
I did not check all the instances of ListView, but in subtitles comparison both lists have incorrect grid and font size (not checked in Win7).
Maybe it would be better to avoid constants in initialization code, and use instead the values directly from Configuration? Right now it looks like there is no method or function for uniform initialization, and every list is on it's own.

On the subject of parameter saving: encoding (code page) is not saved, and there are more things to consider.
For example, I import subtitles with manually selected encoding Greek (Windows-1253).
1. Google autotranslate suggests English to English.
2. On SE restart I get subtitles in my system's default code page (I guess), because it's not Unicode and "LastCodePage" in xml was 0.
3. Autotranslation behaves as in point 1, even if I changed code page manually.
4. Is there any way to change text according to a selected codepage? At the first glance, I could not find one.
5. If import is the only way to change code page of text, then perhaps in the menu there should be also "Import (keep video)..." items.

6. Additionally, when I imported the same Greek subtitles with already open video, the player got cleared, but displayed subtitle remained on screen.

About encoding, in options you can set 'auto-detect ansi' on...
The language should be auto-detected, but perhaps the Greek auto-detection is bad... (Utilities.cs line 1138)

@moob: Some of these features is probably for SE 3.4. Language xml is here.

@Emiliano: I think it's available in "fix ocr errors", but you can also do it in "Edit -> Multiple replace" via regex...

1. Working patch was written in my previous message. I repeat: there were no bad side effects so far.
Since the object toolStripMenuItemInsertUnicodeSymbol is not used anywhere else, I assume it was an error from whoever wrote this piece of code.

2. Code page was recognized as Greek with ANSI autodetecton "on".
But no changes with auto-translate for Greek, though. Still English to English.

While even without autodetection and with incorrect code page, autotranslate correctly suggested Spanish, Polish and Italian for texts in corresponding languages. Unicode file in French I do not count here.

My recommendation is to uninstall all codec packs (incl. K-lite), reboot, and then install LAV Filters 32-bit - DirectShow Media Splitter and Decoders.

And no, not better. Smaller font, otherwise the same: subtitleListView is not initialized with proper values (I think), font changes with focus change in active line.

I used to copy the downloaded file over the older one, then extract the executable from SubtitleEdit.zip.
Now noticed, that the special archive has a different name. That way, I was looking at wrong build.

Correcting myself now.
I checked that special build 1651, and the main list looks as good as in the build 1653. Tahoma & Times New Roman, 10 and 12 pts, no difference at first sight. List in syncronization menu are good too.
Probably you do not need any special code, it would be shorter and simpler too.
Maybe XP is not that big evil, after all?

But still there are two lists in "Files-Compare" mentioned above; those had the same issues and were awaiting for fixes.

On a sidenote: is it intentional, that splitter below the list ia a tabstop? To see that you only need to press tab key once when input focus is in the list: the splitter gets focus and could be move with keyboard.

Auto-translate recognition in build 1653 for that same Greek file worked when code page was 1253, otherwise it's "English".
Maybe for single language code pages, like Greek, Turkish and the like, it would be better to suggest by looking at already selected (and probably user-approved) code page instead of unreliable heuristics?

This is an issue with font size in the main list, not with unicode supoort in general.

In the build 1654 the main list is still narrow, lists in comparison look good now.

-double click in list draw an opaque cyan band over the text, hiding it;

-opening an Roumanian srt defaults to French in "Fix Common Errors" (bad heuristic?)

-"Use online names..." from http://www.nikse.dk/se/Names_Etc.xml checked gives an 404error each time I open Settings/Fix Common/Spelling

-the OCR seem to ignore a lot of words, all the "ca" & "fl" are ignored for english and the spelling can signal them only after the OCR.
I wish to suggest a closer integration of the lang specific Spelling with the OCR engine, meaning: spelling on each subpic and the corrections used to improve OCR accuracy. From tesseract site I see to have an improvement in words recognition if some wordlists are provided?
As an alternative to tesseract, I dare suggest "GOCR"(sources in C are available). Without user intervention/training/spelling it gives 99% accuracy and is much faster at least for english in DVDSubEdit. I think it is more subpic oriented as tesseract is for a wide range of uses and needs narrowing.

If I can help improving SE with ideas, training, testing on w2000&XP machines, please let me know.

I begin to like SE almost the same as Subtitle Workshop wich has less features but seem more user friendly (or it's only my habitude).

Other minor things to consider, some of those were mentioned above.
1. What about changing default volume to saved volume as in most media players? It should be better when opening the same video a number of times.

2. Besides, for the volume in settings, drop down box with 100 values is not considered to be a good practice. Spinbox or slider with numerical value could be better, though it hardly needed if point 1 is implemented.

3. When point sync window in cancelled, SE main window goes to background. SetForgroundWindow(...) should be added somewhere.

4. What's your opinion about taking first guess for translation from the code page when possible?

5. Perhaps you can change "Open (keep video)" to "&Load (keep video)", then "L" would be working as a hotkey.

I think it enough for one message, but there are more to come. :)

I don't trust/wait for M$ to patch my OS security holes. I have Kaspersky IS and a hardware router firewall. Last w2000 setup has 8+ years old on my internet machine and still don't blink.

It is slightly more complex.
For example, I have maximized Firefox and in foreground windowed SE.
SE has open video, waveform and loaded subtitles. Open "Point sync", open "Set sync point", cancel both windows - and I am in Firefox.
Obviously OS loses track what should be active. Maybe because both opened sync windows have no Parent set, but I am not sure. Either this, or SetForgroundWindow().

re:4. code pages
I believe there is a huge amount of legacy subtitles in the net. Old programs like Subtitle Workshop never worked with unicode.
For that reason it might be useful to pay attention to code pages. Because automatic language detection can be fooled easily with short files or mix of languages.

Also, as mentioned earlier, SE does not save and restore the last code page, which could create troubles with non-unicode subtitles on restart.
Standard serialization would have saved and restored this, will it not?

Ideally, code pages should be kept for all "RecentFiles" entries.

Maybe it does not look like a lot of fun, but in the end, it's about user's convenieces. Though your opinion is decisive in such cases. :)

Found something about translations and point sync.

Do you remember greek subs?
Open, translate to English, delete last line or point sync with penultimate line
Point sync for:
line 1 - 00:03:24,167
line 1153 - 01:48:54.280

Most original subs will go away from the list, line to line correspondense getss random.

I could suggest to disregard original timing, and use line numbers instead for correspondence (necessary to show original text in video).
But I am not sure what to do with the original timings when saving original subtitles.

The resulting srt that I created from these files has duplicated lines and sections which overlap each other. When I use this SRT in Handbrake when converting to M4V there is a point where the subtitles get stuck.

posted by Regeer at 12-20-12 6:46 PM: I would like to see a feature that was also available in Jubler, namely the option to select a couple of lines, or even all lines and then being able to drag them forward or backwards, just like you're able to do with only 1 line, now, in the waveform/spectrogram.
For re-syncing this would be a little easier than just using "Ctrl+Shift+A".
I don't know if this can be easily integrated or not, but would surely like it if that were possible.

And the player MPC-HC can't open the idx/sub created by SE I see this problem on BDSup2Sub++ in doom9.org but SassBot fix it.

I don't know here is he post in doom9 but i think is a problem o idx compatibility.

posted by Ramon at 12-24-12 6:11 PM: I did test the RC1 version but I reverted back to the 3.2.8 (I can't remember why though, I think it had odd errors in the OCR that weren't there in 3.2.8). I also tried installing the original version of Tesseract, but that resulted in a not working SE: everything came out garbled, no matter what setting I used (so don't try it if you use SE!). I had a hard time getting everything back to working conditions (had to use safe-boot). Luckily I had a copy of all my original files.

I have one question: I usually use Tesseract modus, but sometimes it skips words (a sentence ending with a word followed by 3 periods like 'ending...' ) and sometimes it skips certain lettercombinations (both reproducible, but in specific types of fotns) like 'zaken' becomes 'ken', 'gezin' becomes 'gin' (both valid words in my language) or 'Hoezo?' becomes 'H?', it also does not recognize italic. Is there a way to detect and possibly highlight sentences that are italic? I now just use the Image compare for OCR if I have a bunch of subs with a specific font.

The CPU load is way up and even when I pause the playback the program continues to use a significant amount of CPU. It's a problem because the playback is too jumpy to be of any use when this happens.

I think it was not reported here yet.
Load subtitles, go to Options and increase font size. The grid gets adjusted properly. Close the editor, open it again. The font size appears to be correct, but the grid itself still has the default vertical spacing.

But for me the biggest problem is not show in my TV (Sony Bravia FullHD) neither.

If convert VobSub (idx/sub) created by SE, to VobSub (idx/sub) by BDSup2Sub (java version), I can open in MPC-HC/MPC-BE and work in my TV.

the idx file created by SE is a little different than created by BDSup2Sub and AVIAddXSub.

But I have change some parameters in idx file without any result.

Maybe the problem is in the sub file not in idx file.

But as I said, I do not have skills enough to help you fix this problem.

The problem is the cursor in it that jumps like a second a time, it doesn't have an even flow so it makes it kind of hard to use while syncing a movie. Anything that can be fixed?

And then I have a problem with VLC that I haven't been able to solve else where so I'll try to ask here. When I press play the movie starts at once but there's no sound for about 2 seconds. If I pause and play the sound starts at once but if I skip forward or backward the sound disappear for a few seconds again. Anyone got a solution?

Would it be possible to make Subtitle Edit use Media Player Classic for playback instead of VLC?

Without the "use custom colors" it miss the letters wich, maybe because of the shadows or contour, get mixed together: c-e, e-c, ca, fl...you got the point.
Checking the "use custom" enables 4 squares(gray, white and 2 black). Fine tune those 4 colours should improve the chars separation.
Please help with some settings, autotune for color cancelation or some other rip-tesseract-fix solution, as I need to rip about 140 DVD's.

As an idea, the ripped result, wich I think is a suite of gif/png's with some timestamps attached, can be saved for later resume, retry or retraining the tesseract engine?

I do have some questions for those who are more acquainted to the program than myself. For instance, can I create a shortcut that would enable me navigate in the video the exact distance I need to ? The minimum duration by default is 100 milliseconds, but I usually need to go frame by frame, which means 40 milliseconds for PAl and even less for videos for 29 or 30 fps. I know there is a button I can use, but I find that tiring to reach for the mouse each time I need to morve forward/back two/four frames.
ON the other hand, the vertical alignment (a precious tool) does not seem to work. Even though I choose top, middle or bottom left, my line remains on the bottom line.

I know it is a lot to ask, but I really, really hope somebody will take the time to answer my questions and clear some of the mystery for me.

SE cannot show alignment in the subtitle preview - try VLC media player. Note that not all video player/converters support alignment.

@Marcio: You can drag a 16-bit stereo wave file into the waveform control in SE.

1.The internal player timecode is not the same as the burned-in timecode the in video.

2. The subtitles are in synch in SubtitleEdit, but after encoding they appear 12-14 frames later.

This is not present, when using a videofile with i-frames only, or with more then 2 I-frames in one second.

This issue is not present in some professional subtitling software, like EZTitles.

If a subtitle begins with a line that Remove Hi is set to delete it also removes the numbering so that the subtitle begins with line 2. Don't know if this can be a real problem for some players or if it's just cosmetics.

A line with two rows that begins with a - and where one of them only contains text that will be removed, the - is left behind and put at the end or the begining of the other row.

And this is a general problem, - is left in a lot of different situations and I can't seem to make a list that'll remove them.
If I want to remove all the for example 'Mm-hm' and 'Mm' in a text, what should I add to the list?
Adding 'Mm' and 'hm' leaves me with a bunch of - and adding 'Mm-hm' leaves all the 'Mm' behind. Maybe some kind of Regular expression that is used in the regular search need to be added for it to work??

Would it be possible to make the lines that are found editable like in the 'Common errors'-dialog?

However there are some new buggy things.

1. If I add a style to ssa and save a ssa with two styles, the Default style definition lacks the last element (Encoding number) — the line just ends with a comma.

2. If I import a Default style from a ssa to another ssa, SE just create a new style with no option imported. Could SE just replace one Default style with another Default style?

I have 'Mm' and 'hm' in the interjection list when I get that result. Only way to solve it is to remove those two and add 'Mm-hm' to the list but then all the 'Mm' and 'hm' gets left behind.

Guess these are missing entries in the German language xml-file that was not updated (and also did not come with the today's version.

Then I've split the last line in two.
SE has renumbered all the lines according to the new order ending up in a complete disaster! :-D

Some ideas for possible changes:
If I sort by, for example, "single line max lenght", and then I do it again, could it be sorted in the reverse order?
Could the sorting by number and by duration be done directly in the list view by clicking on the column name ("#" and "Duration")?

To search for whole words try the reg-ex search... right click and choose 'word-boundary', like this "\bBrian\b".

To get the lines back to normal after sorting, try sorting after start time.

If you find a way around that, is it possible to fix so it also removes the , so you don't end up with ,? or .? at the end?

I have a sugestion to make :) : some "raw" scripts have two lines, the second one with a dash "-" meanning there are two different persons who are talking.
Using "Fix comon errors" with "Fix lines beginning with hyphen" option checked will remove that dash but this solution in this case is wrong, we need that a dash to be added at first line.

Ex:
What to do?
- Making bad days to Nik, ofcourse.

and the "return" of "Fix..." should be:

- What to do?
- Making bad days to Nik, ofcourse.

I saw some examples regarding interjections. One interjection that bother me and seem to have not any solution is "Mm-hmm" or something like that.
I think "Remove interjection" option doesn't recognize "Mm-hmm" so, even I've added to interjections "database" that one will not be removed, as long as I'm not edit it as "Mm - hmm".
I know that "Fix common..." remove unneded spaces, but can be here a solution for this particular case? :)

had the same problem with another .sup file from another video for some reason SE isn't reading the lines that are there it just skips them and shows the next one, I think its a serious problem for that to be happening since some/most people don't notice it when you do a quick ocr.
other programs I use read them fine but don't have the option like SE does, I really hope you can fix this since I don't want to change back to those other programs pls.

In manual mode it's possible to send each of those words into the XML-file lists by one click on the specific button. But the auto mode collects those words in the list boxes and there is no chance to put those unknown words into the specific lists. I even can't copy it from the boxes with [ctrl]C in order to add them manually to the XML. Would you mind to add the functions "add to user dict" and "add to name list also for those boxes?

Another WISH would be to enable the spell check for SUP and SUB files also for SRT files. Right now I can only activate the microsoft internal one if I read an SRT into SE.

The text is supposed to be mixed case, so when I press 'skip one' or 'skip all,' that's when it crashes. (Using Eng (GB or US) language). Perhaps it's because I'm still on XP.

On the last versions I have an annoying bug: every time I open SE with undocking subwindows, the height of the edit field is to big — much bigger than three lines in height, sometimes it is 1/3 of the main window at the expense of the list part. And each time I reduce it down untill next opening.

When you OCR an hardsubbed video it's very common that the OCR sees the same subtitle as many different subtitles (with the same text), each with very short time length. So it happens that you have 6/8 times the same subtitle, and you have to merge them to have one subtitle with the right time length (cleaning the repeated text). Anyway, not a big problem, you can merge them five by five! :-)

I'd like it to display for, say, 1 second. In "Fix common errors" there is "fix long display times" feature and it shows that the line in question, after applying this fix, will have duration time of just 1 second. Unfortunately after fixing the duration time is still 5 seconds. Is there an option (which I couldn't find) to set duration time accordingly to characters count in line?

I plan to freeze features in the current beta very soon, which means that the English language xml file will also be ready soon.

However, I stumbled upon some phenomenon which may or may not be intentional. 'Remove unneeded spaces' skips a leading space. I have a subtitle file where for some reason all lines (including second lines) start with a space and I can't remove them automatically. Or do I overlook a solution for this?

I just discovered that it's possible to copy the transcription created automatically by Youtube to videos that are uploaded there with the "Interactive Transcript" button below the video. I think it's a huge first step to creating the first subtitle for a video. But they only annotate the starting time of the subtitle part.

I pasted the text into Word, transformed it into a table with two columns and then back into text separating the time from the text with a tab. Would it be possible for you to create an importing tool that can use this initial time stamp and make a first approximation for a subtitle file?

2. There is a problem with tags (italic, bold, font) when splitting in translator mode (especially in dialogs).

@Alan: You should be able to use color tags with .srt files. Atm SE does has a problem with color tags and ssa/ass but you can try this version (many ssa/ass improvements like style manager which you can activate by right clicking in list view).

@mboy: Yep, SE is free software (open source) with no spyware or banners, nor any extra programs in installer :)

@Zitrone: It's probably due to chars/sec is too high...
If you try latest test version you can adjust all settings of the syntax coloring via Options -> Settings -> Syntax coloring.

If they are not marked as forced, the you can delete the images you don't want in the list view by right-clicking. Not a perfect solution, but it should work...

Two reasons
1)
I receive from translator 50 sentences in Word.
I put 5-10 sentences into text window.
Then I start and stop video to place in the film one or two sentences.
Then I scroll down to see the rest and to cut it off.

2)
Sometimes I change translation (grammar)in the text window during my work. So I cut sentences to put it in the right order and sometimes I have 3-5 lines in there.
With mouse wheel it would be much easier to see if there is something left in the text window below. I use arrows now, but with mouse scroll the work would be easier and faster.

SO.. Can you activate this option in the latest version?

Here are some requests:

Right now the "split" and "split line at cursor position" don't respect the "Minimum display time between the paragraphs" setting.

Can the "text only copy" feature be made also as a "Save as" option?
Something like "Save text only" in a txt file.
It would be very useful when printing subtitles files just for proofreading.

In the 'List view' and/or in the 'Source view' actually displaing subtitles with italic, bold, color tags in italic, bold, color fonts would be helpful.

And look - it happens also on my friend computer....

To jump to next line just use Alt+ArrowDown (alt+arrowUp for prev line)

A nice addition to the point sync via other subtitle window, would be an option to force simultaneous-parallel scrolling for both windows. If the scroll bar is at the very same point on both windows, it's much easier to find the matching subtitles, even if the total number of subtitles is different for each file.
Also, I miss minimize/maximize on that window.

If you can share the tables, I can do a global find&replace to get that file changed.

It just removes HECTOR: without adding a - instead. It works on lines where both rows start with a "HECTOR:" where it adds - on both on them.

And another problem with 'Remove interjections'. Any way to make it remove "Mm-hmm" and it alikes but not leave the - behind? I've tried adding all kind of variations and parts of the word but can't find something that works.

1. If I swap an original and a translation and then move subs with wavewform or controls in Adjust tab, the changes do not synchronize for both original and translation on file saving. After reopening I have a mess (not aligned subs plus empty subs).

2. Could you add mouse events for video window? Now the left mouse button click can toggle pause/play. Something like that would be very handy: middle button for toggling full screen or 1:1 scale; right button for jump backward for some seconds.

Sorry for returning to the subject, but I miss so much the drag-and-drop from SE text edit field to my Lingvo dictionary. Now I must press Ctrl button for this and this is very inconvenient. I presume that Ctrl button adds to dragging some flag (may be a "copy" flag) and this flag is necessary for Lingvo to receive the drop. However, I can drag-and-drop to Lingvo from all the other programs without Ctrl (from browsers, text editors and so on). Could you please add an option — may be not in the settings dialog but only in the Settings.xml — to revert the flags so that inter-application drag-and-drop may work without Ctrl flag? Or may be SE can track the dragging and when the mouse leaves SE windows the the copy flag will be added automatically?

It works great. One thing that surely isn't an issue for all: is there a chance that single italic words could be tagged correctly?
What SE does is that the whole line is set italic which isn't correct at all.
Though I'm not a programmer I guess it cannot be that difficult to implement because SE already recognizes italic letters, but merely the tagging scheme is wrong.

Is there anyway to make the process faster?? cuz im afraid i cant waste 3 or 4 hours to make an ocr subtitle when with other programs it took me less than 1 hour.

Then, if I tick „Disable visual themes” on its shortcut's properties, everything's good again.

Could it possibly be something about your SE that causes this conflict? No other programs seem to be affected in any way.

I started to use it due to the ocr tool, but once u discover its useless, the program doesnt offer too much more.

Subtitle Edit is mainly a windows application, but due to Mono it also works reasonably on Linux (I use Ubuntu).

However, I don't have a mac or know anything about macs, but kuhnboy has SE up and running on OS X with Tesseract ocr. Nice :)

Some things i'd like to discuss:

1) I upgraded from version 3.2.2 to 3.2.7 (portable) and realized that ANSI encoding is missing. It seems that it's now named as "1252 Western European (Windows)". Am i right? If so, why did you do that?

2) When setting a new file encoding (by default), if we close and restart SE, it will go always back to Unicode (UTF-8), even if you change that in "Settings".

3) Lastly, just a quick reminder: i hope it's still on your mind to go on with a customizable "Chars/sec" in future versions, as we can only change that on the Settings.xml file.

@TC: 1) Yes, 1252 is the ANSI code page for Western Europe. "ANSI" alone is okay, when people only use their currently UI language. But some people use other languages than their default UI language (or English) and now having just "ANSI" encoding no longer works well... I would recommend to always use UTF-8 (I do belive that ANSI is a big hack ;)

2) Could you test this test version?

3) I'll try to remember it for SE 3.3

I've tested the "test version" and it remains as before. I believe if we go to "Settings" and change the "Default file encoding", it should immediately be visible in toolbar, but that's not what happens. Even after restarting the product.

On the other hand, if we choose "Show frame rate in toolbar" and change the "Default frame rate", despite the change is also not immediately visible in toolbar (not sure if it was supposed to), restarting does work in this case.

As a side note, i have to use the ANSI (or 1252 Western European) file encoding because other encodings (namely UTF-8) display weird characters when playing the file(s) in some players. Not sure why...

Perhaps some old players don't not support Unicode - VLC + MPC-HC which I use do (WinXP users might need some Unicode font pack or somehow use some newer fonts, like from Office, or use Times New Roman).

You can also fix italics afterwards - use the list view right click menu and click "Save all images with html index" so you can see where the italics are.
Another possibility is to use the "Image compare" method to OCR.

The issue here is that whenever you open Subtitle Edit 3.2.7 Portable (obviously without ANY subtitle opened on the program) the file encoding displayed in toolbar is always UTF-8, no matter if you change it in Settings, toolbar, etc. Everything was working well on version 3.2.2 and previous, so i'm pretty sure this is kind of a bug.

As per UTF-8, incompatibilities occur in multimedia hard drives/media centers (the ones used to connect and play on TVs), not particularly in computers' media players (like VLC or WMP).

Is there a way to view the header of the subtitle file? the main reason being to determine if an NTSC subtitle file is Drop or non Drop frame.

Also, the option to have drop or non drop timecode under the frame rate conversion would be very useful.

@Pson: You can this this version. Also make sure you have latest version of VLC. In settings.xml you can actually adjust the vlc encode settings. By the way, VLC cannot extract wave audio from *all* audio formats...

I demuxed the movie and then got SE to use the AC3 audio file as video and then generate a waveform from it and then open the movie again. It lags a bit and acts a little weird but it is to some part usable and better than no waveform at all.

In this portable test version you can right click in the list view and choose "Align top/middle/left/right" for srt/ssa files - but this will only work in some players (like MPC HC).
This feature is not 100% tested with all SE functions...

When using the "Import/OCR subtitle from vob/ifo (dvd)" feature I realised that the subtitle file seems to miss some (3-7) lines compared to the subtitle file created with SubRip.
I´ve tested 3 DVDs now on 2 different Computers, always the same problem. Hope you can fix this issue.

I think I have Dutch somewhere set, because spell check immediately takes the right language. Only the Google translate doesn't.

Now SE restores the default width not only after restart, but also after window minimize/restore. Very annoying behavior: I carefully resize the columns in order to place all the SE subwindows and dictionary window so that all the text could be shown handy and SE destroys the column widths every time.

If I quit and then open SE and then minimize (roll down to the task bar) and then restore the window, SE restore the width as well. BUT: if I change the width and then minimize the window WITHOUT QUITTING — SE does note restore the width after rolling up from the task bar. Could SE remember positions just after resizing?

When merging two lines and doing CRTL-SHIFT-M the lines merge nicely, but when I then hit ARROW-DOWN to go to the next line, it jumps back to the very first line on top instead of nicely going down to the next line (example when I am merging 64 and 65 and want to go to 66 with ARROW-DOWN, it jumps to line 1).

Bug 1, 5, 6, 7 and 9: OK, fixed.

Bug 2: I didn't know it, so it's not a bug. I don't use it, I'm usually breaking lines manually.

Bug 3 and 4: Try to download subtitles from http://www.mediafire.com/?aq8aq41ndpvxgr9 and split line 609 in translation mode.

Bug 8: It has something to to do with "Merge lines shorter than (33)". Try this example and fix common errors:

What would make your program super-perfect, in my opinion, would be adding a „quick add” button next to the „Play” button, or whatever. You know?
Something you could keep pushed in order to add a subtitle with the proper/desired length.
That way, your software would offer the complete solution not only for editing, but for creating the best sub files from zero.

Anyway, thank you for this amazing tool.

@Mirko: 3.2.5b1 contains a custom shortcut for creating a new subtitle line when pressing a key - and setting end time when releasing the key. See Options -> shortcuts (try setting it to F2 or ...). It will only work in "Create" mode.

Also, please test Subtitle Edit 3.2.5 beta 1 for any annoying bugs !!!

I've started working on an online version of Subtitle Edit in HTML5. It's will ONLY work on newer browsers (no IE 6-8).

Give it a test drive and let me know how it works!

Yes, the video format stuff is tricky - it seems that IE/Safari is backing mp4 video files and firefox/chrome/opera is backing the webm video format - what a mess ;)

Here's a nice article about video codecs in html 5

Your mp4 file plays in IE9.

I don't know if anyone would like to use the web version...

I was lazy, so I only add subtitle format that do no require additional information when loading, like code page etc.

@Ahmad: Yes, the video codec part of HML5 is surely a mess, but the rest is not so bad, and in a year it will be even better.
Don't worry - the normal SE is still my top-priority-spare-time-project :)

Check out mediaelement.js, it's a wrapper for HTML5 video that provides Flash shims for the HTML5 video scripting API. That should make it possible to use more video file formats across browsers.

Oh, the play symbol is too small, ►(U+25BA) would look better. It's strange that Unicode has a DVD symbol and a pile of poo, but no standard media controls.
