Sturgeon fishing on Fraser River

My first sturgeon fishing trip

In July 2008 I went out fishing sturgeon on the mighty Fraser River, near Chilliwack in British Columbia (Canada).

I met with Grant from www.aquaventures.ca and we started out with catching a few squawfish in Hope River - the preferred bait for sturgeon in the summer season. I also got a small rainbow trout by mistake. We sailed back to Fraser River and soon the boat was anchored and we were fishing after sturgeon! About an hour later the first sturgeon was hooked. It did not fight too well, just steady heavy. It was a 122 cm white sturgeon and I was happy. After yet a few hours another fish took the bait. A nice 120 cm white sturgeon fit for fight - it jumped twice and was much stronger than the first sturgeon. Next I missed setting the hook on a nice sturgeon about 150-160 cm (estimated by Grant when it jumped after I lost it). Too bad, but 10 minutes later I was fighting a good sturgeon. Wow, this was one strong fish!!! We sailed after the fish down river, and after a very good fight the strong 204 cm sturgeon surrendered - just before by arms did ;)

This was my first sturgeon fishing trip (but not my last) and it was great - thx to Grant and Mighty Fraser!

Here are some pictures from the fishing trip and the very beautiful area:

A fast boat is a must.

This smart device allows for easy measuring and scanning (most sturgeons are chipped) of the fish... but only for smaller fish ;)

I'm about to release a 120 cm sturgeon back after a nice fight with two jumps.

The 204 cm sturgeon has finally surrendered after a long fight.

A rope around the tail prevents the sturgeon from escaping.

It's time to remove the hook.

The big barb-less hook is easily removed - and luckily sturgeon does not have teeth.

Big sturgeon and me - both tired, but I'm probably a bit happier...
