Hi, Nikse.

1. Could SE remember the width of columns in the list view between sessions?

2. If I minimize any of undocked windows (for example waveform) and then I close SE and then I open SE and restore the window, SE does not restore the position and the size window had before minimization. Could SE restore them as it restores minimized/normal status of window? There is no such issue if I hide undocked window via menu "Video".

Is it just me, or does the 'Spell Check' and 'Save as..." have the same shortcut?
Ctrl+Shift+s

@aMvEL: Thx, fixed now - the "Save as..." shortcut can also be configured in Options.

Just wondering if there's a reason for the "Fix common errors.."-wizard to place behind the main window randomly, not all the time, after it's done analyzing the subtitle-file? Not that big of a deal really, just annoying when you work with the program a lot :P

Is it a known thing, or is it just with me?

posted by nikse.dk at 11-01-11 7:17 AM
@aMvEL: It's not a known thing... is this version better?

posted by aMvEL at 11-01-11 7:09 PM
It seems to keep in front now, as intended, however I won't know for sure until I've tested it extensivelu ... The main window reinitializes every time I enter and exit the "fix common errors"-mode, which I assume was what you did with this fix.

posted by nikse.dk at 11-02-11 7:02 AM
aMvEL: The main window now hides from taskbar when showing the "Fix common errors" windows, and shows it self in taskbar again, when "Fix common errors" is closed.

Hello,

I must say I'm impressed with Subtitle edit. It's by far the best subtitle editor around. I would like to submit two issues and three feature requests :)

1. The Fix common error Window
a) The "Remove line breaks in short text (all except dialogs)" setting is not remembered across sessions.
b) The size of the window is not remembered across sessions.

Feature Requests

1. Auto apply fixes
With the standard functionality the user has to check for issues then press "apply selected fixes". After the program is rescanning the subtitle to see if has more issues and so forth. It would be great if we had the option to "auto apply fixes" based on the ssttings of the "Fix common errors" window and program to apply all fixes until either no fixes are left to apply or until encountering an issue that cannot be fixed.

2. It would be great in the Log tab if the lines of the problems that the program cannot fix were clickable, and by clicking them to open the appropriate line in order to manualy fix it. If this cannot be done, could these line been marked somehow in the user interface? (The workaround is to copy the log to an editor)

3. A batch mode for "Fix common errors", "Remove text for hearing impaired", "Change Casing", "Merge short lines" and "Split long lines" would be great. Instead of loading each subtitle one by one then apply the batch to multiple subtitles according to an order a user specify

eg first Remove text for hearing impaired, then Change Casing and then Fix common errors)

Thank you for your great software!

Many thanks, Nikse, for a fantastic program.

I'm having a little problem importing OCR. If I choose Tesseract, it begins reading the lines but they are not written to the subtitle text. The lines change to orange orange background without text. If I use image compare, it works.

I had no problems with an earlier version, can't recall which one.

Thanks again for a great program

Hello there Nikse! I just updated to Subtitle Edit v3.2.2 and I experience crash (Unhandled exception) when trying to change font colors of a subtitle. Can it be fixed or it's a problem of mine?

posted by nikse.dk at 11-05-11 7:49 AM
@menes: Thx, the two issues should be fixed. Could you supply a sub for request(perhaps issue) 1?
2+3 I'll try to add in SE 3.3.

@Dogo: Thx, What OS do you use, and have you also installed Tesseract via the Tesseract installer?

@Raj: You could add a style in source view, and use it on specific lines (right click in list view) - or set color for line parts (select part + right click in text box)

@LEO33: Ups, this is a bug, thx. Fixed in latest dev version.

Get latest dev version compiled here - or get it from svn and compile it yourself ;)

Thanks, Nikse

OS is XP SP3
SE is 3.2.2 build 25663

I had the standalone Tesseract installed for a while in this box but I uninstalled it afterwards. I've cleaned all the references to the old Tesseract and now SE is working fine.

Many thanks for your help

The status of the "Prompt for unknown words" checkbox in the "Import/OCR" dialog isn't remembered between sessions.

Bug: During OCR, if you click in the list of already processed subtitle lines, the line that's currently being processed will overwrite that line.

posted by nikse.dk at 11-06-11 8:37 PM
@Dogo, thx for info!

@sialivi: OK, SE now remembers Prompt for unknown words.
Does the ocr overwrite bug still occur in this version?

posted by sialivi at 11-07-11 6:04 AM
Looks like it works, but there's now a minor rendering glitch in the subtitle list when doing it: The list entry I clicked on now looks blank (but it isn't, the cell just hasn't repainted)

@sialivi: thx, tried to fix that too.

Hello,

Thank you for taking under consideration the feature requests I suggested.

You asked "Could you supply a sub for request(perhaps issue) 1?". What do you mean?

If you mean an example of a subtitle that the program cannot auto-fix, I haven't one right now but there are cases that are recorded on the log that the program cannot fix (example, totaly screwed overlapping subtitles)

Again thank you for your great program and for taking my suggestions under consideration.

Thanks for the fixing Nikse! Now the coloring of the subtitles works great! :)

Hi Nikse!
Do you remember about "cursor position" in the text window?

Best regards! :)

I agree with menes. I always use the same features on each subtitle without changing the options. If there will be an option where multiple subs can be selected, and the features (fix common errors etc.; it will be better in an order user defines) user wants can be applied automatically to all of them, it will save a lot of time.
I use this program a lot, it's a great program. I recommend it to everyone I know.
Thanks for your efforts.

It seems SE attempts to store Settings.xml in the directory where its binaries are placed. Although it's ok for the portable version, I believe it's a wrong behavior if SE is installed into the "Program Files" directory - in this case the current user's profile directory should be used instead.

posted by nikse.dk at 11-11-11 9:45 PM
@Serg: Are you using the portable or installer? What os version?

posted by nikse.dk at 11-11-11 9:57 PM
@menes: I ment if you have a subtitle that re-produces that fix common errors must run two times to fix errors (actually I've seen that too).

Right now I'm focusing on getting a very stable SE 3.2.x version... so new features that requires language file updates will have to wait for 3.3.

Also, if you have a smart phone - try this url

Hi, Nikse.

What about my comment above (11-20-10 1:20 PM)?

posted by nikse.dk at 11-12-11 1:56 PM
@vmb: Sorry for not answering... I'll look at it later. I'm trying to fix a stable 3.2.x, so most new/improved stuff will have to wait for 3.3.

Btw, what do you need specific list view column size for - are the default sizes not okay? It's rather complicated as number of columns can change (network mode, original subs, ssa/ass, etc.) and different fonts can be used.

posted by vmb at 11-12-11 3:52 PM
@Nikse: I use all the undocked windows and a window of the dictionary on PC and notebook and place them so that they don't hide most part of original and translation text columns. And for each translation session I need to change a width of other columns so that I can see the most part of the main text columns. And when I record the voiceover with SE and audio editor I widen the translate column up to the most width and I need re-widen it for each record session. It will be handy if SE remember the last width of a certain column in some database and restore it if the column appears. Or may be SE could store the column widths with different column modes (widths for translate or simple mode, width for srt or ssa/ass, etc.).

Good luck with stable 3.2. I will wait whatever it takes. If you will consider it as an worth improvement at all :)

] Are you using the portable or installer? What os version?

I tried both. I didn't succeed with the installer probably because I'm on Vista and have UAC enabled. Then I switched to the portable version of SE which works fine but if it's located in a folder where the user has the write access.

posted by oleg at 11-12-11 11:22 PM
Serg: That is the whole point of the portable build.
You need to do a better research the next time.

The installer does everything right for you.

posted by nikse.dk at 11-13-11 9:42 AM
@Serg: The installer works fine on my Vista machine (with standard installation) - I just had to accept an UAC prompt when starting the installer.

posted by Serg at 11-13-11 12:48 PM
Installer works for me as well, no problem with the installation itself. But when I launch SE after the installation, SE complains it cannot save "Settings.xml".

posted by nikse.dk at 11-13-11 1:00 PM
@Serg: Hm, try to delete the "Subtitle Edit" folder before installing as SE probably thinks it's still running as portable. Any better?

posted by Serg at 11-13-11 3:56 PM
A small clarification: after SE is installed, it produces the "Please re-install Subtitle Edit (installer version)" message when starting and the following unhandled exception on the exit:

It seems I've figured out the problem. To reproduce just try to run SE from the account that is different from the accout was used to install SE. This is my case: I install software from an admin account but work under another one - as a regular user. And under my admin account SE runs without errors.

I've looked through the sources and found out that the SE installer copies some files into the "{userappdata}\Subtitle Edit" directory. After that, when SE is starting and if it detecs it's installed, SE tries to find the Path.Combine(Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData), "Subtitle Edit") directory. But if SE was installed from the different accout, that directory just cannot exist. This fact actually causes the "Please re-install Subtitle Edit (installer version)" and the further problems.

Some bugs (Windows 7 64bit, translation mode):
1. "Minimum display time between paragraphs" adjusts times only for Text and not for Original text. And I can't undo it in history.
2. Merging more then two lines doesn't work for Original text.
3. Hunspell spell checker has problem with one letter words (in Czech language) although they are in suggestions.
4. Word spell checker hides SE main window to the background and spell checker doesn't show on Taskbar. And mainly it doesn't save changes to the text!
5. Hunspell considers Czech quotation marks („“) to be part of the word.
6. Replace (Ctrl+H) works only for Text and not for Original text.
7. Tags don't work in waveform window.
8. Video preview doesn't support color tags, they are ignored (but not inside other tag.

And I want to suggest something like Projects (*.stp files) in Subtitle Workshop one more time. I know that SE remembers opened subtitles and position in subtitles and video. But I usually work on several projects at one time and it would be great feature for me.

Wrong splitting of subtitle in italic:
Hello world, how are you?

After splitting:
Hello world,
-----------------
how are you?

It should be:
Hello world,
----------------------
how are you?

posted by Trottel at 11-13-11 4:16 PM
When I have subtitle with dialogue:
- Hi, John.
- Hi, Peter.

It would be better to split it:
Hi, John.
-----------
Hi, Peter.

I don't know why, but the slider of the audio with visual synch is always set to half the volume, but even with it to full it's still much MUCH lower as opening the same videofile in Windows mediaplayer or VLC.

Also there isn't a way to jump to a specific time in the video (yeah there is a way to jump to a specific subpos, but not directly to a time)

posted by Andrew at 11-13-11 10:43 PM
Would also be nice if you have the option 'Select current subtitle while playing' in the visual sync screen (or is there another screen I have missed which you can use to easily move complete blocks of subtitles because they are timed wrong).

posted by Andrew at 11-13-11 10:49 PM
ok never mind the last comment about the 'another screen'.. BUT! due to it being at the bottom of the screen, the preview is very small, it would be a good thing If a user could position it next to the subtitles list (when maximized on a 16:9 monitor there is plenty of room next to it, especially if you're gonna use splitterbars)
Also found the default volume option in 'settings', but even with it too full, the volume is still lower as with mediaplayer itself or VLC..

I have the same problem you had with empty subtitle file after OCR-ing. I may have had the subtitle edit installed but I erased it and I now use the portable version.

You wrote you fixed your problem by erasing references to the previous version. How exactly did you do this?

Thank you

How does Subtitle Edit detect which language the subtitle is? I have a norwegian subtitle that SE thinks is english, so that it keeps wanting to change all lowercase i to I. It uses english OCR-fixes.

Also why are _some_ of the i to I errors detected by using the "fix alone lowercase i to I"-option and when it is not selected, some (or all?) of them are detected by the "fix common OCR-errors"? I'd think that is a bug?

posted by Carl Lindqvist at 11-23-11 11:58 AM
Hello. The text encoding is not working correctly. I tried to save a subtitle as timed text. The xml says utf-8, but the actual encoding seems to be iso-8859-1 (ansi). I have selected utf-8 as default encoding in settings, but it has no effect on the final xml.

posted by Carl Lindqvist at 11-23-11 2:42 PM
Hello again :)

Another bug in timed text: Padding of milliseconds is not correct. Example "00:01:59.40" should be "00:01:59.040".

posted by nikse.dk at 11-23-11 11:09 PM
@kalehrl: The variable left by the tesseract installer is called "TESSDATA_PREFIX". I think you can remove it via the registry or perhaps like this. Also, do try latest test version which includes some dll files that might be needed by Tesseract.

@aMvEL: The language auto-detection is counting commonly used words - does not work with short subtitles. Yes, the language should be possible to choose in Fix common errors!
The "fix common OCR-errors" is much more advanced - uses spell checker and custom ocr dictionaries.

@Carl: Could you send me the "before" subtitle?

Thanks for a great program.
But two thing annoys me and the first one make the program almost unusable to me. The undo function.
Any way this can be changed so it works like in "all" other programs so that Ctrl-z undo the last change? Maybe it's just me that's stupid but this history list is confusing as hell and I can't get the hang on it and it takes so much more time to when you have to use the mouse, scroll and stuff just to undo. Sure you can keep the list cause it's probably those that like it but a simple classic undo can't be that hard to implement on Ctrl-z.
And second, is there any way to get rid of the confirmation box when you delete a line? Once again it's just annoying and takes up time, cause if I hit delete I want to delete it. If it happens to be a mistake I hit Ctrl-z to undo. At least I hope it'll be that easy in upcoming versions ;)

posted by pson at 11-26-11 9:18 PM
DOH!
Forget about the second thing, can't understand how I've managed to miss that check-box for so long ;)

posted by pson at 11-27-11 3:24 PM
I found another second thing instead..
The way the wave form is scrolled should be the opposite as it is now. In other words, it should go in the same direction as the list view goes when u scroll. The way it is now when scrolling down makes you go backwards in time is illogical. Something to make optional perhaps?

posted by nikse.dk at 11-27-11 3:43 PM
@pson: I'll look at the undo - the default behavior of ctrl+z for textbox needs to be overwritten (maybe version 3.3)

About the new second thing - look in options for waveform/spectrogram - Reverse mouse wheel scroll direction :)

posted by pson at 11-27-11 6:52 PM
Sounds great :)
Guess the reverse scroll option is new from 3.2 and forward? Only had 3.2.2 installed for brief moment since it was to unstable on my machine. Couldn't find anything I could replicate to make it crash either so I'm using 3.1. Guess I'll stick with it and try 3.3 when it's available.

posted by nikse.dk at 11-01-12 8:08 AM
@pson: How does undo work in this version?

posted by vmb at 11-01-12 10:55 AM
Hi, Nikse. Some issues in the new undo.

1. After text undo cursor moves before first character. Could it stay in the current position?

2. Text undo undoes all the changes in the current field at once and does not undo the changes in the previous fields. Could it work more gradually for the current field and more deeply for previous fields?

3. If I print something and then change something in the macro-history (timing, for example), neither text undo nor macro-history undo work (text changes do not roll back and menu call for history says there is nothing to undo). Could these two undo systems work more independently?

posted by aMvEL at 11-01-12 2:42 PM
Just to follow up regarding the detection of what language the subtitle is; I have a norwegian subtitle for the movie Howl's Moving Castle, and it detects it as English, although it is 905-subposts, thus not a short subtitle.

I've attached it here:

I have a similar problem as Dogo. Using Tesseract, I get only the first two lines. The rest is orange. I use Vista 64. Do I need to install tesseract seperately? I did that and I keep getting error messages. Should I use the installer or the portable version?

Latest SE test version - change log

@vmb: I've tried to fix 1+2 (very good ideas) in above update. Also #3 might work better!?

@aMvEL: Thx, was a bug in language detection, should also be fixed in above update.

@Sou: Do try the above test version which is a portable version. No, do not install tesseract installer separately... or you will have to remove the environment variable "TESSDATA_PREFIX" manually. If you still have troubles perhaps you could email me the offending subtitle.

For some reason I only get gibberish when I try to auto-translate anything into Japanese. I was using this program exactly for that reason on a different computer and it worked, but now just random symbols and such. I can change the whole program to Japanese, and I can type in Japanese and everything displays fine. Also I can auto-translate into every other language, Chinese, Turkish, etc. and they all work, only the Japanese doesn't work (which is the only one I am wanting). Any idea what the problem could be?
