1. There is a bug with subtitle deletion in the translate mode: if you select the one element in the list and delete it, next line in the original text is replaced with an empty line.
2. And it will be useful to add some more deletion functions for the translate mode: delete both lines in the original and translation, delete only in original, delete only in translation.
3. May be you should add an info about video fitting shortcut (Alt+A) to the settings or to the help page.
2. Well, suppose we have two sub files, English and Russian. In the English sub there are some unnecessary lines (HI-lines, for example) and we want to delete them in order to coordinate the lines in two subs. We need the deletion function only for one column in the list view.
And I often need so much the same addition function, only for one column. Suppose there is an English inscription in the video stream (some signboard, note and so on). In the English sub there is no need to dub it, but in the Russian one we need to add a translation.
I know, the single column addition is a more complicated thing. Because if we delete one line from one column the other ones just shift by one position. But on one column addition we need one line dummy in the other column and this dummy must not be added in the saved file.
Great! Will download and try this new version when I get home from work. This program amazes me! :) Good job!

Hmmm, let's see: tell me what I have to do in order to avoid this kind of issue:
BEFORE CHANGE CASING (you know - normal casing, sentence ....): "He'd be saying the same [Bleep] thing."
AFTER Change Casing: "He'd be saying the same [Bleep] Thing."
Another one: after 3 dots (I mean "..." :) ), when I use Change Casing option, the first letter on any words that came after "..." it's capitalized and of course I don't need to happen that.
Can you do something about? Or holyday is already begun? :D
Another issue: when I select part of the waveform and right-clik it, the shortcut menu sometimes list 4 commands (including 'play selection' & 'add text here'), but also sometimes only 2 or 3 ('play selection' option dissapears).

3.2b3 crashes when fixing common errors on non-english language subs.
OCR-ing with tesseract also crashes on non-english subs.

Thanks for the great program
Several requests for functionality:
*better support for subtitle format MDVD {y:b} is italics for single line {Y:b} is italics for both line To tag only one line, the first letter in the code({y:b}) should be small. For two lines, big{Y:b}. Identical to the code of color and bold.
*better support for MPL2 Italic effect is obtained by inserting a "/" (slash) at the beginning of the text. eg [768][815] /italic|normal
[768][815] narmal| /italic
[768][815]/italic|normal
[768][815]narmal|/italic
such as Media Player Classic - Home Cinema in this way supports these subtitle formats
*subtitle cleaning of all tags ({y:b} [i]) most stationary player does not support any tags in subtitles

Please include Icelandic charset in vobsub reading by image compare.
Thank you. Yes MPL2 works. Maybe you could add a "/" also for the MicroDVD. Sometimes "/" is used to indicate italics in MicroDVD.
posted by klm at 11-13-07 1:16 PM
to my last comment may be added in menu 'Fix common errors', repair invalid italic tags in MicroDVD, when this "/" is first in text line change this to {y:i}
and sorry for mistake may in MDVD , of course for italic is a {y:i}, "y" with "i", not with "b" {y:i} is italics for single line {Y:i} is italics for both line
Hi, 1) There are still a lot bugs in translator mode. Try to insert, split or merge lines and than choose "Save" and "Save original subtitle" and then compare these subtitles.
2) "Adjust all times (show earlier/later)" option affects only entries in translated but not in original subtitles (same as font effects, styles and colours).
3) As vmb wrote, some more deletion functions in translator mode would be great. I'm using them in Subtitle Workshop and they are very useful.
4) SE doesn't remember "Show waveform only" or "Show spectrogram only" in waveform window. Every time when I open SE, it shows wave and spectrogram and I have to switch it.
5) It might be good to have some feature like "Save Project" in Subtitle Workshop. It could be e.g. xml file, that stores some useful information like: path to original and translated subtitles (and which are displayed in video and wave window), path to video (and audio), path to waveform and spectrogram (and if they are displayed). So you can have different settings for each subtitles project.
6) If I have a mkv file with multiple audio tracks, is there any way how to choose from which audio track will be wave and spectrogram created?
7) I'm missing possibility to search in both subtitles same as vmb. Could be in Find dialog some options like "Find in Text", "Find in Original Text" and "Find in Both".
6) If you use VLC, there is a track submenu in the video menu. If you use DirectShow with fddshow installed, you must activate stream switcher in the fddshow audio decoder configuration window — then you will be able to switch tracks in the system tray fddshow menu (but may be there will be some problems with track switching in some players).
To vmb Thanks, I knew that I saw it in language file. But I was using DirectShow so I couldn't find it in the menu. I was switching tracks in Haali Media Splitter system tray menu. But in this case SE always creates waveform from default track. With VLC it works fine now.
Sorry, but the new beta still does not search in the original text for me. Could anybody test this?

Some things like fixing - at end of line to ... , and removing Hearing Impaired text also removes the italic-tags. It's not really a big problem as you can fix the tags with the "Fix Common Problems"-function. However in the case of removing HI-text it can remove italic tags at the start of the sub line, in turn makes the fix-function remove the italic tag altogether.
Also another HI-bug:
(# ARTIST: Song title)
becomes:
Song title)

Hello, I was thinking about ability to undock wave and video separately. It would be nice to have a video window on second monitor.
One thing that's been bothering me though, could you make a setting for "default format", SubtitleEdit seems to auto-default to srt, kind if annoying having to change it each time i have OCR'd a file into ass. Closest think to it i found was "Default file encoding"

Fix Common OCR Errors suggests the following change:
Thanks for the awesome software. I found the Subtitle Edit 3.2 Beta 3 still has problem with the .ass file. When I open these files, some features like color, font will change anyway. I don't know why......
Yeah, sorry, it finds in both original and translation now. Thank you.

Hi, I also emailed you about this. Is it possible to add an "add period after lines where the next subtitle starts with uppercase letter" feature to the Fix Common Errors? I've come across many subtitle files which have exclamation marks, commas etc. but lack periods. I see you already partially implemented this (add period after lines where the next line starts with uppercase letter).
I'm using last update from 11-15-07 8:10 PM. SE sometimes doesn't remember selected line when starting and scrolls back to the beginning. And I can't merge lines, I always get error.

Not sure if anyone else has this, but when I click on the waveform it jumps to the right as shown by this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3cqQ9wBDkg . It makes it difficult to precisely place the subtitles but not sure if I'm just being stupid, thanks, Paul

Hi guys. you can put a function to synchronize subtitle on DVD ?
Thx for all the bug reports :) I sure have some bugs to fix and some stuff to test, before I can release RC1.
@Johny007: Undock video/waveform is available via the Video menu.
@Robmerc: SE 3.1 includes Spanish - available on the download page. Hopefully 3.2 will be translated too.
@xiaowang: Advanced SubStation alpha should be better supported in SE 3.2!
@Mike: Could you send some sample files and explain a few more details?
@mboy: I'll try to add it in SE 3.3...
@Trottel: What bugs are left in translator mode? Do you have a smaller mkv file with audio delay (gmail accepts attachments smaller than 20 mb)? The merge lines error should be fixed here
@Paul: Yeah, VLC seems to jump 0.015 seconds forward on my computer. Very strange - this hack fixes it on my computer... I think it's a bug in vlc, but it could also be SE. I'll have to look at bit more at it.
@John: Sorry, SE cannot edit binary DVD files. You will need some DVD authoring program for this.
If I double-click on a word with a tag after or before it (i.e. abcd.< /i> or abcd< /i> or < i>abcd), SE selects both the word and the tag (and all the punctuation marks between them).
Also this happens with some punctuation marks combination (i.e. abcd." or "abcd).
Can you fix it so that SE could select only word letters (and may be hyphens inside words)?
I will send you description of bugs in translation mode by email. Unfortunately I don't remember which file was it so I was trying to reproduce this audio delay bug with another file but I wasn't successful. It's OK now so it looks like maybe it was wrong file. Yes, this version fixes merge lines error. Thanks.
Thank you for fixing the bug with tags. However these combinations are still selected as a one bulk:
"abc abc" "abc"
Sorry for annoyance)

There's already a "Add period after lines where next line start with upperface" fix, but I need the opposite: Make the next word lowercase after a line that *doesn't end with* a period, exclaimationmark, questionmark, or *ends with* a colon
posted by sialivi at 11-10-08 10:31 PM
It would also be nice with a "fix common errors" fix to add "..." after lines that doesn't end with punctuation.
@Fix commor errors and lines without punctuation: I not really sure what to do here - how can I now that a line without punctuation does not continue on next line? Anything related to this will be in 3.3.
Right now I'm fixing some bugs regarding translator mode reported by Trottel. Translator mode combined with waveform does not work too well at the moment, but I'm working on it.

hey, it would be nice with a simple feature to just change framerate on VobSub. Keep it up.

Are there any way to use wildcards in the OCR-Fix-Replace-list?
In Norwegian, there are so many words that needs splitting. Like; "atjeg", "skaljeg". I was hoping for something like "*jeg" -] "* jeg".
Is there any possibility for SE to handle subs with temporary empty lines? See, I create a new translation for an original text; SE staffs it with hyphens; it is very annoying to delete all of them line by line while typing the text, so I use the "Replace" dialog. But after saving and reopening the translation SE staffs the temporary empty lines with timing as a text.
Could SE support another user shortcut for this "Set end and go to next"? In Cyrillic layout I often press Shift+/ key combination, which enters comma, then I press Space. And I often press Space when I have not released Shift yet, so "Set end and go to next" snaps into action unintentionally. And Ctrl+Z does not correct the timing mess then.
@vmb: The empty line bug (a new bug) should be gone again. "Set end and go to next" shortcut can be changed in the settings.xml file - and undo should now work for this as well! http://www.nikse.dk/SubtitleEdit.zip (update only, overwrite existing files in SE folder)
Get the following error on Windows 7, which ofcourse has to do with MS moronic rule that you can't save settings (or any other data) to the program files folder. Because of the same problem you cannot close SubtitleEdit using regular way and you'll have to use the Task manager to end the process.

@nikse Regarding the doubtful results you mentioned. Maybe the fix could be added with a warning that it should only be used in special cases and you need to pay attention to the results before accepting the changes (this is how I do it anyway).

I will report my experience from SE 3.1 (portable version). Also, i read the previous comments, but if i've missed something, please forgive me.
I found a 'bug' in 'Chars/sec' calculation, retrieving a wrong result (e.g.: 34 characters with a 2,00 sec exposure should retrieve 17 Chars/sec but it shows 15,50).
I would like to make some suggestions too: 1) possibility to select certain lines (by an interval, e.g. lines 1-150), from the Edit menu and simply by dragging the mouse button over those lines; 2) European Portuguese translation.
Spaces are not counted in 'Chars/sec' 1) You can select multiple lines in the list view with windows standard functionality: a) click on item and hold shift down while using arrow/page up/down b) click on item + Shift click on last item
2) A European Portuguese translation will be very welcome: http://www.nikse.dk/SubtitleEdit/Help#translate

Thanks for the tip Nik :) My bad...
But i still think it would be very useful to have that command on the Edit menu!
As for the 'Chars/sec', it is strange that spaces are counted for the 'Line length' but do not in 'Chars/sec'. I spoke with several partners, who guaranteed me that spaces should count.
Also, i noticed that when a line as a break, the 'Total length' does not match the 'Single line length' count (e.g.: 29/29 should be 58, but shows 59).
P.S.: as i am a complete programming noob, can you explain to me how can i make spaces count for the 'Chars/sec'?
@TC: OK, spaces will count too. How should new-line be counted?
posted by TC at 11-23-08 3:26 PM
Much appreciated for that Nik :)
I'm not sure what did you mean by 'new-line'? (the count per se is perfect, i.e., it counts letters, punctuation, spaces, ... and not the tags '[br', '[i]', ...)
I just pointed that when a given line has breaks, 'Total length' should simply be the sum of 'Single line length', but as it is now, it gives a slight difference. Look the above example, please (it looks like it counts an extra character per break).

Persian is right to left language but English is left to right language, how can mix this 2 language without problem, my base language is Persian. for example in Microsoft word 2010 when i put text direction right and align right, i have not problem, in subtitle edit 3.0 in text box was 'insert Unicode control character' but in subtitle edit 3.2 not, it's very good for me and i need it directly

I often find that the same spelling errors occur in many subtitle '.srt' files after I have converted them from '.sub' and '.idx' files.
I see that your program has a "Fix common errors" option under "Tools".
Is it possible to have an option to add the users own common spelling errors to this list?
For example, I have to change "wory" to "worry", and "sory" to "sorry".
I would like to be able to add my own list of spelling errors and corrections to this option, or even make it a separate option under "Tools".
It could even be as simple as a plain text file that is read by your program. One line contains the misspelled word, and the next line contains the correct spelling.
Sorry for the long post - I am just starting to use subtitles and found that your program is the best for correcting, adjusting the frame rate, etc.
Regards,
Roger
Edit:
I just found the "OCR Replace list"!! I guess this is what I need to edit!
If you add a drag-and-drop functionality, please, add as an inner drag-and-drop (inside text fields, for word and clause permutation), as an outer one (between SE text fields and other programs, such as digital dictionaries and web browsers). It will be much simpler to edit and translate with drag-and-drop.

Thanks for considering it, nikse. You are right, there can always be doubtful results, but they can be easily checked, thanks to the sortable fixes list of the mighty SE!
